The Auschwitz Album: The Story of a Transport
January 27—October 15, 2006

Black-and-white photographs document the arrival and imprisonment of Hungarian Jews in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.

These powerful images, taken by Nazi S.S. officers in May of 1944, are the only visual evidence of what took place inside this infamous death camp. The exhibition, created in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, presents a unique collection of images that show the unloading of the crowded trains, the selection process for slave labor, the confiscation of property, and the preparations for extermination.

These photographs were originally assembled into a photo album that somehow found its way to the Dora-Mittlebau concentration camp in Germany. On the day the American Army liberated the camp, a prisoner found the album hidden in the S.S. barracks as she searched for clothes. Recognizing herself, her family, and friends in the photographs, Lili Jacobs took the album with her as the camp was being evacuated. The album eventually was donated to Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem, and the photographs were reassembled and restored, creating an extraordinary historic record.

This exhibition was created by Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Israel. The Field Museum presentation is made possible by the American Society for Yad Vashem.

Generous support has been provided by the Crown Family.
