As urban planner, architect, and designer of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, no one has more indelibly shaped Chicago than Daniel Burnham.
As part of the city-wide centennial celebration of Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, a design competition has gathered proposals for a new outdoor, public memorial to Burnham. The proposed site for the memorial is on Chicago’s Museum Campus, just north of The Field Museum.
Now on display at The Field Museum, view all 19 proposals for monuments honoring Burnham, submitted by architecture and design firms from Chicago and around the country. The winning proposal, by David Woodhouse Architects, is portrayed in detailed models. Also on exhibit is a bound volume of Burnham’s original 1909 Plan of Chicagodiscover how this document influenced the city’s growth throughout the 20th century.
Admission to The Burnham Memorial Design Competition is included with Basic Admission.
This exhibition was organized by the Burnham Memorial Design Competition Committee, which is associated with the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Chicago), the AIA Chicago Foundation, and the Burnham Plan Centennial.
Significant support for the competition has been provided by The Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust.
