The Field Museum's collections from Africa began as a subset of the biological and geological specimens and cultural artifacts displayed at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Immediately, these objects became the focus of research as well as exhibition. Since these first days of the Museum, the Africa collections have grown through expeditions, purchases, exchanges, and gifts. They continue to draw scholars and artists with their scientific, historical, and aesthetic value, as well as their relevance for solving contemporary problems.
