Which current Chicago player held the record for most home runs in a season for just 45 minutes in 1998?

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1968, Sammy Sosa entered the major leagues as a Texas Ranger in 1989, only to be traded to the Chicago White Sox that same season. Sosa struggled in his first few years, averaging only nine home runs a season. This led to his trade to the cross-town Chicago Cubs on March 30, 1992. His career improved almost immediately as Sammy slammed 33 home runs in 1993, his first full year as a Cub.

During the 1998 season, both Sosa and St. Louis Cardinals’ Mark McGwire chased Roger Maris’ 37-year record of 61 home runs in a single season. Sosa beat the record, finishing with 66 homers that season, only to be tied by McGwire 45 minutes later (McGwire ultimately hit 70 homers that year). Sosa ended the 2002 season in Chicago only one home run shy of 500 for his career, a feat achieved by only 17 other players in Major League Baseball.
