Modern China (1912–The Present)

China’s long age of dynasties came to an end in 1911, when citizen revolts toppled the weakening Qing ("ching") Dynasty.

The transition to the twentieth century brought the first significant changes in jade-working in more than one thousand years. With new diamond saw blades (and later, in 1958, electrically powered tools), jade workers could achieve very fine surface detail. Jades from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries demonstrate what artisans could accomplish with new technologies while preserving traditional forms.
