Doel Soejarto, University of Illinois at Chicago Faculty Member and Research Associate at The Field Museum, combs the forests of Southeast Asia collecting a wide variety of plants. These plants are shipped to the National Cancer Institute and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where they are tested for their potential to treat cancer and AIDS. Doel and his team have earmarked chemicals from several plants as potential cures for these deadly diseases.

Doel Soejarto was born in Java, Indonesia, and studied at Tijawi, Indonesia and Harvard University.
