Delving into Pacific Deeps
Janet Voight
Pacific Ocean

Janet Voight studies deep sea animals like octopuses and squids. Almost two-thirds of our planet is covered by deep ocean waters, but we know very little about deep-sea animals. The cold, high pressure and absence of light in the deep sea have limited scientific studies of this, the least understood habitat on Earth. Submersibles allow Janet to send experiments to the sea floor, to observe animals where they live and to collect them for study at The Field Museum.

Janet Voight was born in Davenport, Iowa, and studied at Iowa State University and the University of Arizona.
