Look at those legs!
Mammals walk, run, swim and climb on legs of all shapes and sizes.
Some legs evolved shaped for maximum power; others evolved for
speedy long-distance running. And certain legs strike
a balance between power and speed.
Legs adapted for power have thick, heavy bones, with ridges
where strong muscles are attached. Toe bones are thick and short.

To cover lots of ground fast, a leg must be long and slender.
The fastest runners have long feet, and run on the tips of their
toes (and often have just one or two toes, at that).
