Classroom Activity Suggestions for Teachers

Classroom Connections
Ask students to read each profile.* Lead the classroom in a discussion about science careers and women in science. Use the following questions as a guide to the discussion: What do these scientists have in common? What is unique about each of them? What qualities seem to be important to succeeding in science? Are women scientists different from men scientists? Which careers seem most interesting and why? Can you think of other careers in science that sound interesting?

Explorer's Journal
The Women in Science web site is not only about learning to explore the world outside; it is also about discovering what is most personally meaningful and satisfying to explore.

Ask students to keep an explorer's journal. To get started, have students read each profile* then write about their personal reaction to and interest in one of the fields of study they read about. Additional entries might entail making a list of hobbies, writing about a favorite subject in school, creating profiles of role models through interviews, reviewing a book about a hobby or career, listing the professions of family members and friends along with the skills and tasks required. A final entry might include researching the field of study they wrote about in the first entry, then writing a report about that field and their opinion of it before and after researching it.
