Chocolate
Now accepting bookings for 2008 and beyond!
Tantalize visitors with the natural and cultural history of one of the world's favorite treats. Chocolate is a bilingual, immersive exhibition that explores chocolate’s origins and roles throughout history and around the world.
In the exhibition, visitors can learn about chocolate as:
- Cacao tree in the rainforest
- Ritual offering in Maya culture
- Currency in the Aztec market,
- Class privilege in 16th-century Europe
- Mass-produced commodity in factories and on the stock exchange
- Modern product of cacao plantations
- Source of endless fascination for present-day cultures around the world.
Chocolate creates a stimulating, sensual experience through tactile elements, audio environments, vivid imagery, and the scent of chocolate to enhance the experience and connect visitors to the lives of distant peoples, past and present.
The Field Museum is extending the tour of this highly popular exhibition through 2011. Highlights of the exhibition’s extension tour will include approximately 200 objects, props, and highly detailed replicas, interactives, scent components, attractive graphics, and several audio-visual elements. Past Chocolate hosts have experienced significant attendance, press attention, and retail sales in connection with the exhibition. Even more rewarding, they have created thousands of educational interactions with family, school, and adult visitors.
Chocolate and its national tour were developed by The Field Museum, Chicago.
This project was supported, in part, by the National Science Foundation.
