Scott J. Demel, Ph.D.

Currently, I am the Head of Collections Management for the Department of Anthropology. I oversee all aspects of collections management, conservation, and registration in the Department. I also work on collections-based research projects, as well as contribute to exhibit development and content. I am also the archaeologist in charge of conducting salvage archaeology for the museum’s construction projects, as the Museum is located on 35 feet of landfill deposited during the early 1900’s.

My focus in archaeology is the prehistory and early history of the Great Lakes Region. My recent fieldwork includes sites in Kankakee County, the early history of Chicago’s Chinatown, and work at the Pullman State Historic Site. I earned an MA from the University of Illinois-Chicago and in 2000, my Ph. D. in Archaeology at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. My dissertation work focused on remnant archaic settlements along the western coast of Lake Michigan. Some of my other research interests include: the Archaic period, the peopling of the Americas, coastal paleoecology, Great Lakes prehistory, early Chicago history, marine archaeology, and lithic analysis. I am also adjunct professor in the Anthropology Department at DePaul University.
