Janet Voight, Ph.D.

Associate Curator, Invertebrates

Janet Voight is an expert in cephalopod mollusks, notably octopuses (the correct way to discuss more than one). She began work as a curator at The Field Museum in 1990, four months after receiving her Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. As is typical of Field Museum scientists, Janet tries to study her target animals in nature.
However, in contrast with her colleagues, when Janet goes to the field, she goes to sea. Because octopuses are voracious predators that occur throughout the world's oceans, a better understanding of how they survive in the deep sea, the least-known habitat on earth, may improve our understanding of how they are related to shallow-water octopuses and provide clues to life in the deep sea in general.
