Collections Use: At Home, Around the World, and on the Web

Specimens in our collections are extremely valuable to scientists: a German scientist studying African shrews, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service inspector investigating a case, a student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo identifying mice from a Gorilla Sanctuary, they all use the Field Museum’s mammal collections. As we grow and maintain our collections, their value increases, as does their ability to help unlock many mysteries still shrouding our planet.

The Museum not only allows scientists to access our collections on site, but we also assist them by loaning out specimens, sending the mammals to institutions around the world. Today we are delivering our collections data in ever more innovative ways. One such project is the Tanzania Mammal Key, a database containing images of Museum specimens that allows Tanzanian biologists, and others, to access our collections via the Internet.
