Michi Schulenberg
Assistant Collection Manager, Division of Mammals, The Field Museum
Michi Schulenberg is a critical component to the entire process of preparing, cataloguing, and installing the Museums mammal specimens. Michi received a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland. A long-time member of the Field Museum, Michi started volunteering in The Mammal Division in 1991 and was assigned to the prep lab. It didnt take long for the curatorial staff to recognize her brilliance; they hired her full time in 1994 to organize and handle the preparation process.
John Phelps
Collection Assistant, Division of Mammals, The Field Museum
John trained as a chemical engineer and worked for an oil company for 12 years, after which he began volunteering in the Museums division of mammals. When a position in the department opened up, he realized that "they will even pay me to do this!" John has been with the Museum for 15 years and currently spends most of his time running the specimen loan program and organizing the mammal collection. It's sort of like being a librarian in charge of a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, he says.
