ECCo’s Laurel Ross and Mark Bouman are on the team that will implement an important new vision for the National Park that is only an hour’s drive from the Museum—the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

After two years of research and input,  “National Park, Regional Treasure: The Future of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore” was released September 26 at the park by the National Parks Conservation Association, the Eppley Institute, and The Field Museum.

The report is a blueprint for park staff and the many park partners in the Calumet region, where ECCo has worked for over 15 years, to work together to protect this great national park, the ecological jewel of the region.  Considering the challenges and opportunities at the park, there is quite a lot to keep us busy.

As part of this process ECCo’s Abigail Derby Lewis, Doug Stotz and Laurel Ross convened regional scientists to advise on research priorities, park management, and climate change adaptation.

Mark will be working on finding ways to implement the report's recommendation to establish a Cultural Heritage Trail connecting the park to Chicago.

No better time to visit the Dunes than fall!
