Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg visits Cordillera Azul National Park
During his brief stay in Peru, Steinberg went on an overflight of Cordillera Azul National Park with USAID Peru Mission directors. USAID’s presentation to Steinberg focused on ECCo’s REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) pilot project with our Peruvian partner CIMA and funding from Exelon Corporation. Although delays due to an extra third-party validation requirement for the new Avoided Deforestation Partners methodology threaten our schedule, we still intend to enter the carbon market by the end of 2011 to secure long-term funding for the park and for standing forests in Peru. USAID is considering extending our funds for park management to cover the gap caused by the unexpected delays, promoting our collaborative efforts in Cordillera Azul as the showcase for the U.S. advancing REDD in Peru.
