The Field Associates' 2008 Year in Review

Thursday, February 7, 2008: We kicked off the program year with a viewing of photographic exhibition On the Horizon at David Weinberg Gallery. Todd Tubutis and David Foster from The Field Museum Exhibitions Department presented an overview of the exciting exhibitions that opened at the Museum in 2008, and we unveiled the 2008 Field Associates calendar!

Wednesday, March 26, 2008: Field Associates explored behind the scenes at the Museum’s annual members’ night and then gathered at Grace O’Malley’s nearby on South Michigan Avenue for an informal reception and drink specials.

Thursday, April 17, 2008: Mammal Collections Manager Bill Stanley took Field Associates behind-the-scenes to see a sampling of unique mammal specimens. Accessed daily by researchers from around the globe, the Museum’s collections are critical to understanding and conserving the world’s biodiversity. From the hammerhead bat to the meat-eating beetle colony, Bill showed us things we had never seen nor will soon forget!

Tuesday, May 6, 2008: The Field Associates hosted a private reception which offered a chance to view Exploring the Arctic Sea Floor prior to attending a public lecture with renowned underwater photographer David Doubilet. Field Museum scientist Janet Voight was on hand to discuss her research on sea floor vents informally with guests.

Saturday, May 10: Field Associates had the opportunity to volunteer in support of a family friendly fundraiser hosted by The Field Museum’s President’s Leadership Council in conjunction with Mythic Creatures. We assisted guests with mask-making, a treasure hunt and other activities as they explored myths from cultures around the world.

Tuesday, July 15: Martinis and Membership at Martini Park! Field President John McCarter joined current and prospective Field Associates for a fun social networking opportunity and chance to learn more about The Field Associates. This event was generously sponsored by Martini Park.

Thursday, August 7: Gallery owner and loyal Field Museum supporter Joel Oppenheimer shared his vast knowledge of natural history as art while members enjoyed a reception surrounded by Audubon, botanical, and other nature-inspired prints at Oppenheimer Gallery on Michigan Avenue.

Sunday, September 28: The Field Associates spent the afternoon working in teams at the group’s annual Scavenger Hunt, complete with prizes and a post-party watching the Bears game at Fat Cat in Uptown.

Wednesday, October 22: Field Associates enjoyed a private viewing of Nature Unleashed – a temporary exhibition about natural disasters - along with a presentation by Anthropology Curator John Terrell and exhibitions project manager, Tom Skwerski.

Tuesday December 2 and Thursday December 4: Field Associates members got into the holiday spirit by volunteering at the Women’s Board’s annual Children’s Holiday Celebration on Thursday or gathering at a member’s home two days earlier to enjoy wine, casual dinner and baking and decorating cookies which we donate for the celebration.
