Splendors of China's Forbidden City
Introductory Video

Splendors of China’s Forbidden City: the Glorious Reign of Emperor Qianlong, brings to American audiences an unprecedented collection of objects from the remarkable reign of the emperor Qianlong. Each of these treasures tells a story: of how, for example, a small ethnic minority, the Manchus, managed to rule over a vast ethnic majority, the Han Chinese; how the members of the emperor’s family lived a life of luxury, but also one bound by rigid tradition; and how the inquiring mind of the emperor Qianlong delved into subjects as diverse as ancient calligraphy, metallurgy, jade-carving technique, and the technology of clocks. Preview a specially-produced two-minute video program that introduces these themes and highlights selected objects from the exhibition.
