Triple Blak (aka Oscar T. Lester)

Triple Blak (aka Oscar T. Lester) is one of the nation’s preeminent, contemporary spoken-word artists. His work has taken him all around the country and enabled him to share stages with such artists as: Musiq Soul Child, The Last Poets, Malcolm Jamaal Warner and a variety of other artists and performers. In Chicago he is considered a pioneer on the Open Mic circuit. Appearances at venues and events such as; House of Blues, Dance Africa Chicago, Second City Theater and Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry competition (first place winner) have caused him to be regarded, in his hometown and abroad, as one of the most talented poets in the country.

Through a complexity of dialect, dialogue, and drama; Triple Blak utilizes his verbal skills to articulate poetry that is both thought provoking and entertaining. Triple Blak was featured in Plugged Magazine as Poet of the Month (Sep. 2002). That same month, he as also one of the spoken-word artists selected to perform in the Neo Soul Concert Series (chosen to open for David Hollister). His performance in the Najwa Dance Corp’s; Tell it Like It Is, production won him a Black Theater Alliance Award for 2002 and he was nominated to receive a Chicago Music Award in 2003. He can also be heard on Malik Yusef’s CD; The Great Chicago Fire. Currently, Blak is working with Bob Warner (father of Malcolm Jamaal Warner) as co/founder and artistic direct of Runaway Wordsmyths, which is a traveling ensemble of spoken-word artists who use their poetry to communicate tales of the inner city.
