Cristina Verán
Cristina Verán is an international journalist, historian and educator who has documented global cultural phenomena and socio-political movements extensively. Her work has featured in a wide range of media including Ms. Magazine, ColorLines, Vibe, News From Indian Country, Oneworld, Newsday, The Witness, and others.
As a United Nations correspondent, she is a featured on-air panelist for the UN's news-roundtable television program World Chronicle, as well as a member of the Indigenous Media Network. Issues and initiatives concerning the world's indigenous peoples comprise a particular area of her focus and specialization.
Ms. Verán lectures frequently at universities and cultural institutions, and develops specialized curricula and workshops on media making and cross-cultural communication for programs serving urban/immigrant/indigenous youth at schools/libraries/agencies, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Her extensive documentation of hip-hop culture's beginnings and its global dispersion includes a history of pioneering female rap artists in the '70 and'80s, as well as another on the evolution of hip hop danceforms, featured in "Hip Hop Divas and the Vibe History of Hip Hop, respectively [Crown Books/Three Rivers Press]. Predating professional life, her teen years begat an inspired tenure as a [pre-superstar-era] rap artist, and she has been a proud memeber of internationally reknown hip-hop arts
collectives TC5 and the Rock Steady Crew.
Raised and residing in New York, Ms. Verán is originally from Lima, Peru.
