Machu Picchu: Unveiling the Mystery of the Incas
October 15, 2004—February 13, 2005

Welcome to Machu Picchu, nestled high atop the Andes Mountains in Peru. Once thought to be a mysterious lost capitol of the Inca empire or a sacred spiritual center, this Peruvian archaeological site has, until recently, remained shrouded in mystery. Advances in our understanding of the Inca empire, called Tahuantinsuyu, and new archaeological and historical research have revealed that the site was a royal retreat where rulers could relax while still tending to their administrative duties.

The exhibition, created by the Yale Peabody Museum, allows visitors to explore Machu Picchu through the lens of the 1911 “rediscovery” of the site by Yale archeologist Hiram Bingham III. The exhibition tells the story of Bingham’s 1912 Yale Peruvian Scientific Expedition, where he and his team members unearthed numerous anthropologically significant artifacts, many of which are on display here. Bingham’s work was most important in providing insights into the remarkable technology and culture developed by Andean native peoples prior to the Spanish invasion.
