Inca Craftsmanship

The architectural features remaining at Machu Picchu give us a good indication of how skillful the Inca were in engineering and art. Polished stones were painstakingly chiseled and fitted together to create walls of intricate geometry. A complex system of roadways connected Machu Picchu to every outpost and city in the empire, enabling easy trade and ensuring safety by controlling travel routes. These walls and roads—especially in reference to their harmonious relationship to the spectacular mountain landscape—remain one of the culture’s greatest accomplishments.
