Shawn VanDerziel
Shawn VanDerziel is responsible for the Human Resources, Information Technology, Education and Library departments. He manages the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources department which serves over 650 employees and 600 volunteers. He leads the Information Technology Department to strategically assist Museum staff in implementing and maintaining important technologies that advance the quality and efficiency of their work and the Museum’s electronic accessibility to the public. Shawn works with the education department and libraries to oversee all aspects of public programming and school and teacher partnerships, including: lectures, festivals, overnights, teacher training, school groups and programs, summer camp, performing arts, field trips, a robust scientific research based library program, photo archives and special collections.
Shawn began his career with The Field Museum in July 1997; was promoted to Director of Human Resources in May 2004. In January, 2006, Shawn was promoted to Vice President, Administration.
Prior to joining the Museum, Shawn was the manager of recruitment for a permanent placement recruitment firm that placed candidates with fortune 500 companies. Additionally, he spent several years working in higher education as a student admissions director. He has earned his Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in interdisciplinary social sciences. He is currently serving as the Vice President-Employer, for the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
