Diggin' Sue
Calling all Junior Paleontologists:
Join the Sue Discovery Dig
Admiring someone else’s dinosaur discovery is one thing. Unearthing your own…now that’s an adventure!
Join us this summer at the Sue Discovery Dig for one of the most spectacular expeditions this side of China. Junior paleontologists are invited to help uncover a full-size replica of Suethe world’s largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rexoutside Chicago’s Field Museum on our new southeast terrace.
The Sue Discovery Dig is a great activity for kids and families. It opens Friday, May 27, for Memorial Day weekend and continues through Labor Day, September 5, 2005.
Get Down and Dirty
The thrill of discovery! The bones beneath your feet! Kids of all ages love to dig for treasures, and there’s something for everyone at The Field’s latest outdoor attraction.
Toddlers can burrow safely in the sand, feeling their way to “dinosaur bones” just under the surface, or simply enjoying the pure pleasure of digging.
Older children will find more challenging tasks: using paleontologists’ tools like brushes and sifters to uncover buried fossils, and identifying their discoveries with the help of our resident dinosaur teamField Museum docents and teen volunteers. Kids will unearth the life-size bones of T. rex Sue, cast from the original fossil that stands inside The Field Museum. Our dinosaur team will lead families in hands-on activities that offer an insider’s view of what it’s like to prepare fossils for research and display. They’ll be happy to talk to kids about fossils, dinosaurs, and how scientists excavate them.
It all takes place under a huge, outdoor tent, with screened walls and benches where parents can rest while they supervise their children.
