Competition of Considerable Size:
The Field Museum Hosts DINO BEE

CHICAGO – The Field Museum is excited to host its first DINO BEE in conjunction with the upcoming celebration of the fifth anniversary of the unveiling of Sue, the world’s biggest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex.

The DINO BEE will be held on March 19 at noon in the Museum’s Stanley Field Hall and is free with Museum admission. Through a qualifying test posted on its website, the Museum selected 50 third graders from around the country to compete in the contest. They will answer questions posed by guest host Don “Dino Don” Lessem, columnist from Highlights for Children Magazine. Field Museum paleontologists will judge the contest.

Families are invited to come out and cheer for these junior scientists as they answer questions based on Sue’s stats, time periods of Earth’s history, and other dinosaur-related terms and trivia. DINO BEE is sponsored by Chicago Parent Magazine.

The first place prize consists of a one-night stay in a “Sue Suite” at The Ritz- Carlton Chicago and tickets for two adults and five children to The Field Museum’s overnight event, Dozin’ with the Dinos. Other prizes include a giant plush dinosaur, a Sue sleeping bag, T-shirts, and goody bags from the Sue Store at The Field Museum.

Also on March 19, Museum will unveil a new exhibition, Sneaky Sea Creature: New Fossil Find from China. The fossilized creature’s scientific name, Dinocephalosaurus orientalis, means “terrible-headed lizard from the Orient.” It has a neck made up of 25 vertebrae, with elongated cervical ribs extending along them. Field Museum paleontologist Olivier Riepple, Ph.D., believes the creature’s long neck and cervical ribs worked to create a vacuum that sucked in prey.
