Museum Stores Celebrate Jacqueline Kennedy's Elegance and Taste

Many visitors will emerge from Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years – Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum with a desire to emulate the first lady’s poise, her sophistication, and her exquisite taste. That doesn’t mean they’ll begin wearing pillbox hats. Rather, they’ll want to express Mrs. Kennedy’s sense of style in terms that suit our own times.

Anticipating visitors’ response, The Field Museum is stocking its stores with items that pay tribute to Jacqueline Kennedy’s life, her passions, and her times.

“Correspondence is a good example of those passions,” says Museum Store Manager Jeri Webb. “Jacqueline Kennedy loved to write notes to people, and she was always writing down observations of the world around her. Visitors will see that in the exhibition, and we expect that it will inspire them to do the same. So we’re stocking some lovely journals, scrapbooks, and address books—including several with covers inspired by Mrs. Kennedy’s gowns.”

Those enchanting fabrics can also be seen in items like small boxes and picture frames. “We plan to have some items that pay tribute to Mrs. Kennedy’s equestrian side as well,” Webb notes. “One picture frame, for example, uses a fabric similar to the riding jacket visitors will see in the exhibition.”

Painting was another of Jacqueline Kennedy’s pastimes. She painted in a sweet, simple style—which may be why she chose noted French artist Jacqueline Duheme, a kindred spirit, to chronicle her trips abroad. Madame Duheme’s charming watercolor miniatures will be available as note cards, and her book, Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad, can also be purchased in the museum stores.

For those who want to take a more serious, historical look at the White House and its residents, the Field will carry a DVD of Jacqueline Kennedy’s White House tour, as well as a variety of adult and children’s books on Mrs. Kennedy and other first ladies.
