A Walk Through Time: Highlights of Jacqueline Kennedy's White House Years

Few of us can walk with the elegance and grace of Jacqueline Kennedy. So let us stroll, in our own fashion, through the styles and memories of her White House years. Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years – Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum reveals the subtle changes Mrs. Kennedy made in her fashions to meet the changing demands of her life. Still, a consistent vision shines through—the unforgettable “Jackie look”: clean lines, solid colors, ease of movement. And always, in her actions as well as her clothes, the unique blend of elegance and youth.

The Campaign
“All the talk over what I wear and how I fix my hair has amused and puzzled me,” Mrs. Kennedy wrote during her husband’s presidential campaign. “What does my hairdo have to do with my husband’s ability to be President?” But of course she knew quite well that her style, from head to toe, spoke volumes. For example, she wore her hats tipped back on her head because she knew Americans wanted to see the face of the candidate’s wife. And when the press criticized her expensive French clothes—including her scarlet “good luck coat” by Givenchy—she made sure they knew she also bought American-made copies from Orbach’s, a popular New York department store. A video in this section shows Jacqueline Kennedy on the campaign trail, speaking to potential voters in Spanish and Italian, and JFK acknowledging the burdens the next president would have to shoulder. Buttons and other objects from the campaign evoke the beginning of a unique moment in U.S. history.
