Armoured Pegasus (Detail)
Pegasus, one of the world’s more well-known fabled beings, is pictured here in an artist’s rendering. This
sculpture was carved by Joe Leonard, an artist influenced by the animals found on carousels. Visitors can see this piece at The Field Museum’s Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids.

Chinese Shadow Puppet
This shadow puppet, in the likeness of a Chinese dragon, is on display in The Field Museum’s exhibit Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids. Unlike European legends, where dragons are wicked and dangerous, tales from Asia describe dragons as beings with enormous powers. They are celebrated for their ability to breathe clouds, move the seasons, and control water.

Chupacabra
Chupacabra means “goat sucker” in Spanish and according to reports, the creature acts much like a vampire, killing animals by sucking their blood. Though similar stories date back several decades, the first major wave of alleged sightings came from farmers in Puerto Rico in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The fanged creature can also be spotted on T-shirts, coffee mugs, and other souvenir items.
