In Search of King Tut

Get a first-hand look at the CT scans and other investigations being performed on Tutankhamun and other of Egypt's ancient mummies. Archaeologist Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities and Director of the Giza and Saqqara Pyramids, is leading an international team of scientists in this provocative look at one antiquity's most enduring mysteries.
This is the last of five presentations in the National Geographic spring series. Follow the legend of King Tutankhamun back nearly 100 years, from the discovery of his extraordinary tomb to the treasures of the current exhibition. The curator of both exhibitions (1977 and today) will talk about the excavation of the tomb and the subsequent exhibitions that sparked Egyptomania in the United States. Regain a sense of nostalgia about the craze around the original exhibition and discover the new technologies that have made this new gathering of artifacts all the more important.

FAMILY PROGRAM
Create a Play in One Day!
Saturday, May 27, 2006, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Join us for a one-day residency program with Foundation Theatre Group. Children ages 7-11 write a short Egypt play under the tutelage of professional actors, cast it with their new friends from the workshop, and perform it in the Museum's main Stanley Field Hall that same day.

- Senet - Ancient Egyptians played a board game called Senet to pass the time. It is thought that there are many ways to play this game. Join us in playing our giant version of this pastime.
- The Seventy Days of Mummification - Ever wonder how many steps were involved in ancient Egyptian mummification? Help wrap a life-size mummy and find out how Egyptians used a natural salt for drying the body, which amulets were placed in a mummy's wrapping and why certain organs were saved for the mummy's journey into the afterlife.
- Egyptian Hieroglyphs The hieroglyphic alphabet contains thousands of characters and symbols, representing sounds. These characters are placed to together to create words and phrases, names and places. What do you think your name looks like in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs? Stop by our interpretive station and find out.
- Build a Giant Pyramid - Be part of one of the greatest building projects since Giza. Help construct a model of an ancient Egyptian pyramid and learn more about the people who built the real structures so long ago.
