Dazzling Treasures Fit for a King

CHICAGO—The glittering ancient Egyptian treasures on display in Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs at The Field Museum are sure to inspire shopping by visitors who long to bring a piece of the splendor home. The Field Museum Stores will be filled with Tut- and Egypt-themed products – enough to satisfy anyone's inner god or goddess.

What better way to commemorate the historic visit of King Tut than with the official exhibition catalogue Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. This National Geographic-published book is written by Dr. Zahi Hawass, the head of Egypt's Council of Antiquities, and tells the fascinating history of Egypt's pharaohs. It also contains vibrant full-color photographs of many of the objects showcased in the exhibition. The cost of this stunning hard cover book with included CD narrated by Omar Sharif is $49.95. Also authored by Hawass is the children's book Tutankhamun: The Mystery of the Boy King (National Geographic Books, $17.95).

Two of the most exquisite items available are the lavish pharaoh and queen CD cabinets, both ornately modeled after ancient Egyptian sarcophagi. Each life-size mummy case costs $1,250 and can hold up to 1,000 CDs. They are also available in a smaller 4-foot version ($575) and 28" size ($240) for less palatial budgets.

Another amazing object is the elaborately carved 28" pharaoh's trunk ($550). This colorful piece is trimmed with gold and decorated with Egyptian gods and goddesses, hieroglyphs, ankhs and scarabs. An ornate furnishing that makes a great conversation starter and is an eclectic addition to any room. Also showcased is a 27" golden bust of Tut. A glittering figure modeled after Tutankhamun's famous gold mask, this striking entity is sure to make any space feel imperial. Other statues of note include a dazzling 41-inch gold finish representation of the god Anubis ($245) and a 27-inch long stone-finish replica of the Sphinx ($275).

Visitors who would like a custom item to commemorate their visit can have a special 18k gold or sterling silver cartouche created. A cartouche is an oblong emblem that encloses characters that convey the names of royal figures. Guests can feel like royalty and have their own name or the name of a loved one produced into a pendant. Costs range from $55 to $200 depending on design and finish.

Guests can also find highly collectible King Tut memorabilia such as T-shirts, glassware and playing cards; as well as Egypt-themed books; reproductions of canopic jars; a selection of Egyptian music CDs; and even Egyptian- and Tut-themed neckties. With merchandise ranging from $1 to $200, there's something to satisfy any budget.

The Field Museum's Egypt Store, located on the ground level of the Museum near the Inside Ancient Egypt permanent hall, also offers a variety of kid-friendly gifts ranging from Egyptian-themed books to dolls and games. Unique gifts for the child in everyone include a 5-foot-tall plush camel ($1,800), shiny black and gold fabric pharaoh hats ($32) and golden mummy key chains ($3.50). Home décor items, books, CDs and videos are also available in this all-Egyptian store.

Travelers who don't have time to visit the Museum can stop by The Field Museum Store at the O'Hare International Airport, located in Terminal 1. Shoppers can choose from a selection of the King Tut and Egyptian-themed merchandise. This satellite store provides a perfect opportunity to pick up that last-minute gift!

King Tut enthusiasts can also shop from the comfort of their own home by visiting The Field Museum Online Store.

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs—and its corresponding merchandise—will be at The Field Museum on May 26, 2006 through January 1, 2007, although scores of items are already available. Call (312) 665-7693 for details.
