The Dinosaur Field Station
Experience the excitement of discovery! Where else but The Field Museum can kids remove dinosaur bones from a plaster field jacket, just like our paleontologists do behind the scenes. They’ll get to examine and measure the bone, identify it, and learn about the T. rex they’ve found. Kids can also build a dinosaur themselves…make rubbings of fossils embedded in the wall…compare their own hands and feet with the footprints of dinosaurs large and small. A magnet wall lets kids create their own “dinoscene,” an ecosystem they can learn more about in our popular exhibition Evolving Planet. And what fun to sit on a dinosaur “nest” with plush egg puppets and make dinosaur babies pop out!
The Rhythm Section
Clap, dance, whistle, sing, or playmusic is a part of every culture, and there are countless ways to experience it. In this space children can listen and move to rhythms from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and see images of people from those regions playing their instruments. But that’s not all. Kids can play alongor create their own rhythmson percussive instruments from around the world.
The Art Studio
Children’s creativity allows them not only to express themselves but to connect with the world around them. In this space, amid colorful displays of specimens and artifacts, docents guide children in creative projects inspired by nature and culture. Programming will incorporate natural materials and change with the seasons, reinforcing the connections between art and the natural world. Youngsters will have an opportunity to create artwork based on the discoveries they’ve made that day, and they’ll take their projects home with themalong with ideas for still more discoveries and creations.
The Book Nook
Even children need some quiet time. The Book Nook is a cozy corner where parents and children can relax and enjoy a selection of fiction and non-fiction books related to the Museum’s activities and exhibitions.
Baby Areas
In several locations, convenient to other activities, parents will find padded infant zones where babies can crawl comfortably while older children play nearby.
