You're Invited to a Really Big Birthday Bash!
Join Us in Wishing T. Rex Sue a Happy Birthday

CHICAGO, IL – Where does a 42-foot T. rex celebrate her birthday? The Field Museum is happy to announce that Sue has chosen to celebrate her fifth birthday with four days of festivities at the Museum, May 14-17.

Why do we say 5 years and not, oh, 67 million years? It was on May 17, 2000, that Sue’s restored skeleton went on display at The Field Museum, along with an exhibition about the world’s largest, most complete, and best preserved T. rex. And besides, where in the world would we get 67 million candles?

In special celebration of Sue’s birthday, May 17 will be a day of FREE admission to The Field Museum, with a special bonus—a free Sue kite—to the first 50 young visitors ages 3 to 11.

We have invited a famous singer, Thaddeus Rex, to serenade Sue with “Happy Birthday” and a Museum paleontologist to chat with kids. There also will be six cakes prepared by pastry chefs from some of Chicago’s best-known restaurants and catering services. The cakes will be on display the morning of May 17, and visitors will be invited to vote for the most imaginative creation. At 11 a.m., it’s free cake for all guests!

During Sue’s birthday celebration, special activities take place in Stanley Field Hall. Here’s a sampling:

  • Sue: The Video. The story of Sue unfolds on a large screen in the main hall—from her discovery in South Dakota to her arrival at the Museum, the preparation of the bones and the spectacular unveiling. Video runs May 14-17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Hands-on activities. See and touch a real fossil. Make dinosaur rubbings, masks, and sidewalk silhouettes. Put together a 3-D foam Triceratops and a map of dinosaur hot spots in Asia. Activities on-going May 14-17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Dinosaurs come to life! Ten foot tall dinosaur puppets—gentle-giant versions of a T. rex, a Parasaurolophus, and a Pachycephalosaurus—will roam the halls of the Museum on May 14-17 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Command performance. Tex the T. rex and his paleontologist guide Dr. Jonas need help! Join them and their dinosaur friends as they try to discover what T. rex was able to do with its tiny arms during a performance at 11 a.m. on May 14-17. A participatory experience presented by Foundation Theatre Group.

The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust is the generous sponsor of Sue's Fifth Birthday Celebration.
