Exhibition Walk-through
Over billions of years, our planet has been shaped by dynamic forces that are still operating today. To discover why these events occur, Nature Unleashed looks at what happens within the earth’s atmosphere and deep inside the planet’s interior, where heat and pressure generate tremendous forces that create earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and tornadoes.
For a preview of the exhibition experience, check out the highlights below.

Earthquakes
Discover what we’ve learned about the inner workings of Earth through poignant images and tales of the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and the New Madrid, Missouri quakes of 1811-1812. Interactive models and animations let you experiment with the forces that make the earth move under your feet. You can manipulate geologic faults, shake quake-resistant buildings, and even listen to the sounds of quakes at different magnitudes!

The Real-time Quake Interactive
Get a glimpse of Earth’s movements in the last decade, the last year, the last week, and even the last few minutes, by exploring an interactive display of real-time earthquake activity across the globe.

Volcanoes
See what science has discovered about the fires that fueled volcanic events at Pompeii, Krakatoa, and Yellowstone and learn how likely new eruptions may be. Specimens from The Field Museum’s collections let you touch different lava formations and learn about the surprising benefits of living in the shadow of a volcano.

Don’t miss:
The Build-Your-Own-Volcano Interactive
Some volcanoes explode with the force of an atomic bomb while others spill rivers of gently flowing lava. Discover what makes these volcanoes behave differently when you try your hand at building a virtual volcano.
