Greensburg Rebuilds

Greensburg’s homes, businesses, and tree-lined did not survive the May 2007 tornado. But almost all of its residents did. They survived because they had warning, they were prepared, and they knew how to respond.

There was nothing these people could have done to avoid the tornado—and in Kansas, there is no way of knowing when another will strike. But that isn’t stopping Greensburg from discussing its future.

Green from the Ground Up
Greensburg may have been unrecognizable in the days after the tornado, but it didn’t take residents long to set to work rebuilding their town and their lives.

After all, it isn’t every day a community gets to reinvent itself. Just weeks after the catastrophe, discussions began about rebuilding “green”—using environmentally sound materials and sustainable energy resources.

Greensburg has the chance to turn unimaginable devastation into opportunity. What kind of community do they want to be? Planners are exploring renewable energy resources such as solar and wind power and using recycled and non-toxic materials in new construction.
