Pearls - Fun Facts

Natural vs. Cultured

Are natural pearls rare?
Indeed, they are—they’re found in perhaps one of every 100 animals, and only one in ten of those are of good quality.

In addition, many pearl-producing species of mollusks are now protected because they’ve been endangered by pollution, habitat destruction, and over-harvesting. That’s why most pearls commonly sold on the market come from pearl-culturing farms around the world.
