Tarantula Brooch
Natural pearl, white and brown diamonds, ruby, brown sapphires, gold
Germany, 1988
Steffan Hemmerle, Munich

An orange-red pearl from a Horse Conch (a marine snail) provides the abdomen of this enormous spider brooch. Its thorax is made of orange Umba sapphires and the eye is a ruby.

When worn perched on the shoulder, as the designer intended, the brooch presents a startling image.
