Pearls: Protecting Pearl-Producing Mollusks
As greatly prized gems, pearls have experienced a long history of human intervention. However, their popularity has led to some predictable problems. Like many other plants and animals that provide valuable products, pearl mollusks suffer from over-harvesting, pollution, and disturbed habitats.

Scientists and pearl farmers are working to develop sustainable methods of production that ensure a continuing supply of pearls in the future.

“The best pearls come from contented oysters.”
