| Databases | Summary of distributions of austral species of Staphylinidae and other Staphylinoidea These color-coded lists provide regional-level distributional summaries of all valid described species known to occur in austral and near-austral parts of the world (Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Chile, southern Argentina, South Africa, Madagascar and nearby islands, and the subantarctic islands). They were extracted from the full catalog of austral species, which should be consulted for additional details. As noted there, some distributional data are previously unpublished, and are based on examination of specimens in collections; such cases are not necessarily indicated. Each list is sorted alphabetically by taxon from family or subfamily down through species and, where applicable, subspecies. Each color-coded column indicates occurrence of each taxon (genera, species, and subspecies only) in a single one of Australia, New Zealand, Chile or southern Argentina, and South Africa or Madagascar, and an additional column to the right indicates its occurrence elsewhere with a + sign. For species and subspecies records, summary information about the taxon’s distribution within the austral areas is presented if available. Indication of a genus, but none of its included species, as occurring in a region means that unidentified individuals or undescribed species have been seen from that region. The regions used are illustrated on this map, with the assignment of islands to regions shown here. A key to the abbreviations used within the austral areas is included at the end of each file below, and each file contains a suggested form of citation.
