South Africa | 2004

Collecting lots of beetles from a rich rotten log (clockwise from L): Dave Clarke, Charlotte Hardy, Margaret Thayer, Al Newton, Peter Hlavác.

Collecting near St. Lucia, on the Indian Ocean coast, was overall not rich for our target groups of Staphylinidae. But these subtropical coastal biotopes are quite interesting for biologists anyway, and contain surprises, like particularly rotten logs really packed with various saproxylophilic (rotton wood-loving) beetles.
