Arctictis binturong

ORDER—CARNIVORA
FAMILY—Viverridae

COMMON NAME—Binturong.

DISTRIBUTION—
Northern Burma and Yunnan to Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. In the Philippines, known only from Palawan Island (AMNH).

HABITAT—
Primary and secondary lowland forest from sea level to 200 m (Rabor, 1986).

STATUS—
Widespread, but Philippine populations restricted and uncommon.

COMMENT—Palawan Island specimens were originally described as a distinct species, A. whitei (Allen, 1910), and are periodically recognized as such.

COMMENT ADDED IN 2005––Sighted in secondary forest and grassland/forest mosaic from sea level to 400 m (Esselstyn et al., 2004).
