DISTRIBUTION
Endemic to the Mindoro Faunal Region; found in remote areas on Mindoro
only (FMNH).
HABITATOriginally
from sea level to high peaks on Mindoro, but now confined to a few remote
areas in rough terrain. Probably prefers second growth and mixed forest/grassland
(Kuehn, 1986; Custodio et al., 1996)
STATUSRare
and geographically restricted; severely endangered and declining (Oliver,
1994; Custodio
et al., 1996).
IUCN:
Endangered.
CITES: Appendix I.
U.S. ESA: Endangered.
COMMENTSGroves
(1969) assigned the tamaraw to the subgenus Bubalus, rather than
to Anoa.
