ORDER—INSECTIVORA
FAMILY—Soricidae

COMMON NAME—Luzon shrew.

DISTRIBUTION—Philippines only; widespread in Luzon and Mindoro faunal regions. Recorded from Catanduanes (USNM), Luzon (Aurora [UPD],  Benguet [USNM], Camarines Sur [FMNH], Laguna [BMNH], Mountain [BMNH], and Rizal [AMNH] provinces), and Mindoro (MMNH). Also reported from Abra Province, Luzon (Lawrence, 1939).

HABITAT—Common in primary lowland, montane, and mossy forest from 250 to 2400 m, uncommon in secondary forest (Heaney et al., 1991, in press; Rickart et al., 1991).

STATUS—Stable; widespread and common.
IUCN: Vulnerable (but we recommend delisting).

COMMENT—C. halconus as a junior synonym (Heaney & Ruedi, 1994
).

NOTE ADDED IN 2005--Recorded in montane and mossy forest from 1,600-2,150 m elevation in Balabalasang, Kalinga Province (Heaney et al. 2004)
