Manis culionensis

ORDER—PHOLIDOTA
FAMILY—Manidae

COMMON NAME—Palawan pangolin.

DISTRIBUTION—
Philippines only; records from Palawan Faunal Region only, Palawan (FMNH) and Culion (Elera, 1915).

HABITAT—
Primary and secondary lowland forest, sometimes localized in distribution (Hoogstraal, 1951).

STATUS—
Moderately common, but heavily hunted; probably threatened in the Philippines (Esselstyn et al, 2004).

COMMENT ADDED IN 2005––Feifer (1998) recognized Manis culionensis as a distinct species, endemic to the Palawan Faunal Region. It occurs in lowland primary and secondary forest and grassland/second growth mosaic; it is probably moderately common and is hunted (Esselstyn et al., 2004).
