FAMILY—Muridae

COMMON NAME—Palawan spiny rat.

DISTRIBUTION—
Palawan Faunal Region only. Recorded from Balabac (USNM), Busuanga (FMNH), Calauit (UPLB), Culion (FMNH), and Palawan (FMNH).

HABITAT—
Secondary and primary forest from near sea level to at least 1000 m (Barbehenn et al., 1973; Hoogstraal, 1951; Musser et al., 1979; Sanborn, 1952).

STATUS—
Common.

COMMENT
The genus Maxomys was reviewed by Musser et al. (1979) and in part by Ruedas and Kirsch (1997).

COMMENT ADDED IN 2005––Common in all habitats from primary forest to agricultural areas, and from sea level to at least 1550 m (Esselstyn et al., 2004).
