ORDERCHIROPTERA
FAMILYRhinolophidae
COMMON NAMEBig-eared
horseshoe bat.
DISTRIBUTIONIndia
to Sumatra and the Philippines. Specimens from Guimaras (USNM), Luzon
[Abra (SMF) and Pampanga (USNM)], Mindanao [Bukidnon (SMF)], and Negros
(FMNH).
HABITATRecorded
in lowland forest from 200 m to 1050 m. Poorly known in Philippines. There
are some records from caves in forest.
STATUSWidespread
but seemingly uncommon.
COMMENTThe
Philippine form of R. macrotis was initially described as a separate
species, R hirsutus (Anderson, 1905), but was later subsumed under
R. macrotis by Tate (1943). Philippine
populations are morphologically distinct from all others, and may deserve
recognition as a distinct species (Ingle and Heaney, 1992). More specimens
are needed to assess this issue.
COMMENT ADDED IN 2005Reported from caves in disturbed lowland forest at 50-250 m on Palawan Island by Esselstyn et al. (2004). Sedlock (2001) described the echolocation call.
