FAMILY—Suidae

COMMON NAME—Philippine warty pig.

DISTRIBUTION—Biliran (UMMZ), Catanduanes (FMNH), Leyte (USNM), Luzon [Abra (FMNH) and Rizal (FMNH) provinces], Mindanao [Bukidnon (FMNH), Davao del Norte (FMNH), Davao del Sur (FMNH), Maguindanao (FMNH), North Cotabato (FMNH), South Cotabato (FMNH), and Zamboanga del Norte (FMNH) provinces], and Mindoro (FMNH). Also reported from Basilan and Samar (Oliver, 1992) and Camiguin (Heaney & Tabaranza, unpubl. data).

HABITAT—Formerly abundant from sea level to at least 2800 m, in virtually all habitats (Rabor, 1986); now common only in remote forests (Danielsen et al., 1994; Heaney et al., 1991, in press).

STATUS—
Heavily hunted, declining rapidly (Garcia & Deocampo, 1995). Also threatened by hybridization in some areas. Extinct on Marinduque (Oliver, 1992).

COMMENTRecognized as a distinct species by Grubb (1993).

NOTE ADDED IN 2005--Reported to be common in montane and mossy forest from 925-2,150 m elevation in Balbalasang, Kalinga Province (Heaney et al, 2004).
