Mayor announces new Spanish language phone line to connect Latinos to Chicago's world class Museums Launch in Celebration of Museum week.
CHICAGO - September 20, 2000 - Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and representatives from the nine Museums in the Park (MIP) museums announced today a toll-free Spanish language phone line that will give Spanish speaking people in Chicago and around the world an easy and direct way to obtain information about each museum.
"In the spirit of Chicago's first Museum Week, the Spanish Museum Information line will encourage people to discover Chicago's world-class museums or re-visit old favorites." Mayor Daley said at a press conference at the Adler Planetarium today.
The Museum Information Line, 1-866-290-1516, provides information on museum hours, admission fees, location and directions, and exhibits and programs for each of the Museums in the Park museums: The Adler Planetarium Astronomy Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, The Chicago Historical Society, The DuSable Museum of African American History, The Field Museum, The Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, The Museum of Science and Industry and the John G. Shedd Aquarium.
"Currently, Spanish speaking people do not have a central resource to find out basis information about many of our museums," said Carlos Tortolero, Mexican Fine Arts Center president and Museums in the Park president. "The Spanish language phone line will allow Latinos in Chicago and around the world access to information about the numerous exhibitions and programs our museums have to offer."
The Spanish Museum Phone Line, coordinated by Museums In the Park, is made possible by sponsorships from ¡Exito! And Univision/66 and in cooperation with the Chicago Public Schools and the Yollocalli Youth Museum, a youth initiative of the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum.
The Chicago Public Schools will ensure that its Spanish speaking students receive the beneficial information about the phone line. Youth involved with the Yollocalli Youth Museum's WRTE-FM (91.5) radio station will translate the information provided by the museums from English to Spanish.
