Special Features

Docents and Facilitated Programs
The Crown Family PlayLab has a reception desk where staff is always available to answer questions. Throughout the learning center you’ll also encounter docents and a regular schedule of storytelling, themed workshops and other programs. See a detailed schedule.

Convenient Facilities
In addition to the six themed areas in the Crown Family PlayLab, everything you need is at your fingertips. Whether you’re a family of five or a pre-school group, our goal is to make your experience fun, educational, and convenient. Inside the learning center, you’ll find an area to park strollers, family bathrooms with changing tables, special infant zones, and even a book nook for your little ones to have some quiet time. Areas where you can have a snack or lunch are just down the hall, outside the Crown Family PlayLab. The learning center is located inside the Museum’s East Entrance, which is accessible for strollers.

Green Highlights
We know how much fun your child will have exploring and discovering the science, nature, and cultural aspects of the learning center. We wanted you to know that not only do we talk about helping the planet, but we put it into practice. Many of the components used to make the exhibition are organic, recycled, or made from only natural materials from around the world. Here are some highlights:
The hardwood flooring is 100% recycled wood that has been reclaimed from old barns and warehouses.
Some of the wood in the cabinets comes from local trees that were damaged due to storms, disease, or insects
Materials have a high recycled content. For example, the tile on the bathroom walls is made from more than 55% recycled glass. Rubber flooring in Illinois Woodland is made from post-consumer recycled tire rubber.
Table tops in the reception desk and Scientists' Lab are made from recycled solid surface countertop material.
The floors in the Scientists' Lab, Dino Field Station and stroller parking are a no VOC tile made from PVC-free acrylic and limestone.
