Illinois Woodland
Try on a costume and explore this forest scene as an owl, squirrel, coyote, cardinal, bat, turtle or skunk. Listen to the sounds of day and night and match an animal’s call with the real animal in the scene. Look very closely to discover elusive animals, a rare flower, and a few other surprises.

Pueblo
Explore life in a pueblo to see what it was like to live in the desert 700 years ago. Harvest corn from a field and try out a mano and metate to grind cornmeal. Cook over a fire and try out a sleeping mat. Cases of artifacts let you see real coil pots, spoons, and a child’s sandals from an ancestral pueblo.

Rhythm Section
Listen to rhythms from Africa, South America, and Asia and then try out instruments from all over the world. Don’t miss the Japanese taiko drum, Vietnamese frog rasp, Indian elephant bells and Native American powwow drum. Or step on the dance floor and make up a dance.

Scientists’ Lab
Children are natural scientists! Here they explore with hands as well as eyes. Surprises in special drawers encourage discovery, a magnifier invites close study, and blocks with special items from the museum’s four divisions—plants, animals, rocks and fossils, people and cultures—can be sorted in all kinds of creative ways. Four tables of scientific specimens and artifacts can be handled, compared, described, and recorded.

Dino Field Station
Uncover and identify a dinosaur bone that has been carefully wrapped and transported to the lab. Discover dinosaur nests and eggs or fill a mural of an ancient landscape with dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Dinosaur tracks in the carpet lead to a handprint station, and a rubbing wall lets you take home impressions of fossils.

Art Studio
Create an original piece of art inspired by nature and culture. Children can trace their own hands and then decorate them with paint, glue, glitter, or feathers. They can paint masks, design and create paper necklaces, make nature collages, or color drawings of animals and dinosaurs. Take your work home or leave it with us to be proudly displayed in the Art Studio.

Docents and Programs
Throughout the learning center you’ll encounter friendly docents and a regular schedule of storytelling, themed workshops and other programs.

Convenient Facilities
Inside the learning center you’ll find an area to park strollers, family bathrooms with changing tables, and special infant zones. Areas where you can have a snack or lunch are just down the hall outside the Crown Family PlayLab. The learning center is located just inside the Museum’s East Entrance, which is accessible for strollers.

Advisory Committee
The Field Museum is grateful for the invaluable input of educators, researchers and museum professionals during the development of this learning center.
