Plan a Field Trip

Dig in ... Dress up... Explore and grow! The Field Museum is pleased to present the Crown Family PlayLab, a 7,500-square-foot early childhood learning center designed specifically for students PreK-2. The Crown Family PlayLab starts with a young child’s natural curiosity, adds real artifacts and specimens, and provides a learning environment for the creative exploration of people, plants, rocks, and animals.

Educator Preview
Early childhood educators can engage the small child in a big museum through the Crown Family PlayLab. This new learning center, specifically designed for students in grades PreK-2, combines a young child’s curiosity with real artifacts and specimens. Start planning your field trip today!

Educator Guide
To prepare students for their trip, take advantage of the activities and information provided in the Crown Family PlayLab Educator Guide. Available on website soon.

Customized In-Services
Interested in learning more about how to use the Crown Family PlayLab to improve your students’ knowledge of the natural world? Register your faculty for a customized in-service today or attend any of our early childhood workshops! Learn more.

Student Classes
All classes are free. Pre-registration is required. Classes are available Tuesdays through Fridays at 10am or 11am and will be approximately 50 minutes in length. Maximum of 30 students.

Educators can also register their class for free exploration of the Crown Family PlayLab from 11:45am to 12:30pm, Tuesdays-Fridays. Maximum of 30 students.

Tuning into Storytelling PreK
Help us weave stories by clapping, humming and playing musical instruments. Storytelling will never be the same!

Seeing Spots PreK
Learn about animal camouflage and spot animals hiding in their habitats! Also, take an up-close look at all of the patterns found in nature—from stripes to spots to numbers!

Journaling through Nature PreK
See and feel nature in our lab! Patterns and textures are used by scientists to identify objects, animals, and plants. Come and create a journal of nature rubbings to take back to the classroom.

I Spy a Dinosaur! PreK
From the Stegosaurus to the mighty T. Rex, all dinosaurs have special features. Through dramatic play and the Dino/Dino Not game, students will learn how to spot a dinosaur.

A Southwestern Harvest K-2
Discover what life is like in a southwestern Pueblo by harvesting and grinding corn.

Animal Adaptations K-2
Uncover a few animals’ secrets to surviving by learning how they adapt to their environment. Learn how you can tell what different animals eat by the shape of their teeth!

Fossil Dig! K-2
Come join us on a paleontology dig! Discover different fossil types and help dig out a fossil cast from a field jacket.

Through the Scientist’s Looking Glass K-2
Become a scientist and ID objects in our lab! With magnification stations, you will look closely at different animals and objects.
